Clothes do sometimes make the man. Behind his thick glasses and perfectly ironed shirts, Nick Waterhouse’s soul soaks in the neatest fifties rhythm'n'blues and soul. Still working with label Innovative Leisure, the Californian artist is releasing his fourth album, recorded at Electro Vox Recorders studios and produced by Paul Butler from the Bees, who is ever so familiar with retro patina (Michael Kiwanuka). This eponymous new album, crafted using period instruments, is blessed with the musical cream of the crop: Andres Renteria on percussions and Kamasi Washington’s father, Ricky, on the flute. In keeping with his previous works, Nick flexes his muscles throughout the eleven tracks with a filthy rock’n’roll (Song For Winners) fitted with saxophone solos of incredibly suave soul (Wherever She Goes (She is Wanted)), and a cover of Joshie Jo Armstead’s I Feel An Urge Coming On.
