The title is misleading because of the two works presented as a "New Mozart" on the cover of this album, one is in fact a spurious Mozart and the other is a Mozart in disguise. A more scrupulous publisher would have mentioned this at the outset, without the need to read the lengthy presentation text. The interest of this new recording of the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, conducted by the former violinist Reinhard Goebel, lies in the rediscovery of this pseudo Concerto No. 6 in E flat major bearing the number Köchel 268, attributed at a time when the frenzy for Mozart accepted any dubious work with eyes, or rather ears, closed.
As the excellent Mirijam Contzen, the brilliant soloist in this concerto, admits, the essential thing is not to know who wrote it, but to discover one of the very many violin concertos written at the beginning of the nineteenth century: if this one has vague Mozart-like forms, its virtuoso writing for the soloist is, on the other hand, a world away from Mozart's and is probably the work of a violinist-composer of the kind that were numerous at the time.
This publishing frenzy for anything by Mozart also included all sorts of arrangements, such as this version, previously unreleased on record, of the famous Gran Partita, K. 361 transformed into a "Symphonie Concertante" by Franz Gleissner in 1800. It must be admitted that this curiosity adds nothing to this immense masterpiece, especially since Goebel hardly troubles to move us in the sublime Adagio, taken at such a fast tempo that it prevents any emotional outpouring. Perhaps this is what constitutes the "New Mozart" proclaimed by the publisher... © François Hudry/Qobuz
