With his look of an extra from The Love Boat, Benny Sings is a bit like a funky version of Mac DeMarco. Since 2003, this Dutch extra-terrestrial - his real name is Tim van Berkestijn - who sings like Gilbert O'Sullivan (remember Alone Again (Naturally)?) and above all Michael Franks, has been making seventies pop that is rather sunny, often romantic, with choruses that are as groovy as California itself. It is only natural that the real Mac DeMarco paid a visit on Rolled Up, one of the highlights of this mellow album Music which has come out on LA's excellent Stones Throw label... Other vintage influences such as the Bee Gees from the disco era and the Jacksons (of the Epic period) run through this very endearing hedonistic trip... As always with Benny Sings, his melodies are wrapped up with great elegance from head to toe. Everything is fine-tuned, falsely nonchalant and truly mesmerising. There's a cheesy, almost guilty pleasure side to this pop 'n' soul that's as comfortable as a silk bathrobe... Such is the hype surrounding our Dutch forty-something that the best of the best have made the trip: Tom Misch came to provide the guitar solo on Nobody's Fault; the Californian rapper KYLE lays down his airy flow on Kids, Cautious Clay brought his hot sax to Run Right Back, and Kelsey Gonzales from the Free Nationals and Emily King embellished the gospel on Miracles.
