The opera buffa La finta giardiniera, K. 196, was a real breakthrough for Mozart. Hear the big finales of Act I and Act II, given lively renderings here by the Munich Radio Orchestra under the direction of Andrew Parrott; they point directly toward the intricate monument that is the Act II finale of Le nozze di Figaro, K. 492. Mozart clearly thought highly of the work of his 19-year-old self, for he put together a German Singspiel version of the opera in 1780 when the opportunity presented itself. This has spoken passages in place of the secco recitatives; the four accompanied recitatives were retained and reworked. Nothing was fundamentally rewritten, but the new version must have taken some time to produce. The German version, Die verstellte Gärtnerin ("The Disguised Gardener Girl"), was successful in its own time, and it is a bit surprising that it hasn't been more common; this is not the first recording, but it was last recorded in 1972. The recording succeeds simply as a take on the opera; a fine ensemble cast is headed by Sandrine Piau, in strong voice as the Marchioness Violante Onesti, disguised as the gardener Sandrina. Sample one of the two big 15-minute finales, where the energy of Parrott and the singers never flags. Hearing this Mozart oddity is a worthwhile investment of time and/or money.
