Four years after Riccardo del Fra released My Chet My Song, an intense tribute to Chet Baker for whom he was one of the last double bassists, he has opened up to the world in his superb new album. Joined by guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, saxophonists Jan Prax and Rémi Fox, trumpeter Tomasz Dabrowski, pianist Carl-Henri Morisset and drummer Jason Brown, Moving People is as much about the current migrant crisis all over the world as it is about what human beings must go through just to survive. Sometimes the titles of his compositions are very explicit (Moving People, Children Walking (Through A Minefield), The Sea Behind) and his improvisations with his collaborators suddenly take on a serious tone. But above all, they highlight the importance of writing for Riccardo del Fra, who is more inspired to write than ever before and just as majestic in his lyrical moments as he is in the instrumental ones. A lovely album. © Max Dembo/Qobuz
