The Elias String Quartet's recording of the Op. 13 and Op. 80 Mendelssohn string quartets has a lot going for it. The relatively young quartet (formed in 1998) plays with the vitality and boldness befitting its age. The ensemble also has at least some basis in academia, with the informative liner notes written by first violinist Sara Bitlloch. Intonation is generally quite good, with only a few forgivable slips. Articulation is quite clear and uniform, and there appears to be a coherent musical sensibility shared by all members of the quartet. The recorded sound is well-balanced and warm, though the lower strings are occasionally lacking in depth. Of course, with youth can sometimes come hints of impatience and immaturity. While the extremely vigorous tempo choices can bring a sense of drive and energy, it can also lead to feelings of hurriedness. The Presto Finale of the Op. 13 quartet seems to get away from the ensemble a little bit; the intermezzo of the same quartet is robbed of a little bit of its stoic dignity because of a too-fast beginning. Throughout the album, phrase endings are frequently rushed and opportunities for rubato are passed over. If the Elias Quartet is able to maintain its passion as it continues to mature and refine its interpretations, it will certainly be an ensemble to watch.
