Over the last decade, Bully have established themselves as one of the best modern purveyors of grungy, '90s-inspired rock. Now the solo project of vocalist-multi-instrumentalist Alicia Bognanno, the group expands on that sound in dynamic ways on their fifth full-length, Lucky For You. Produced by JT Daly (who doubles as lead singer of the band Paper Route) the album features plenty of bruising rockers dominated by distorted riffs ("How Will I Know") but also makes room for churning shoegaze and stripped-down rock gems. "Lose You" resembles the beestung power-pop of Veruca Salt, in no small part because Soccer Mommy (Sophia Allison) contributes piercing backing vocals; "Ms. America" pairs deliberate guitar melodies with Bognanno's wistful croon; and "A Wonderful Life" also puts her vocals at the forefront atop more measured bursts of churning guitars.

Thematically, Lucky For You brims with yearning and restlessness. Bognanno wrote the jagged, Pixies-esque lead single "Days Move Slow" after the death of her dog Mezzi, with whom she shared a special bond; the vulnerable album highlight focuses on navigating this grief. Elsewhere, Bognanno rages against painful memories and life changes on the anthemic opening track "All I Do," during which she hollers, "I wanna feel the way I used to." And the album ends with the ripping, distortion-frazzled "All This Noise," a cathartic burst that lays out various frustrations—the negative impact of climate change, a lack of bodily autonomy, inaction on keeping children safe—and culminates in Bognanno hollering, "I am tired of waiting for changing." It's a satisfying end to Lucky For You—but doubles as a manifesto for Bully's fearless sonic evolutions and ferocious risk-taking. © Annie Zaleski/Qobuz
