Liz Story established herself in the 1980s with a series of mellow but inventive piano recordings for Windham Hill. While continuing that trajectory, she also recorded two albums, in the mid-'90s, of pop standards and jazz classics, with husband Joel Di Bartolo on bass. This is the second of those recordings.
While staying within the stylistic bounds of the romantic pop ballad, Story still manages to bring her unique personality to the songs. An adagio "Mack the Knife" is almost unrecognizable, but reveals the pained sadness behind the jaunty lyrics. "Someone to Watch over Me" is sweet and slightly haunted. Her own compositions "Ana" and "Church of Trees" bear little resemblance to the rest of the album, but sound like they were born of the same playful spirit as the Cole Porter and Johnny Mercer tunes surrounding them.
