Serbian-born pianist and composer Dejan Lazic dazzles with great taste, phrasing, and a clear style of playing in this album of complementary works by C.P.E. Bach and Benjamin Britten. Though one might not ordinarily think of pairing the two composers, here the similarities are quite apparent (hence the title of the series, "Liaisons"). Lazic truly understands the music, as is evidenced by his tasteful phrasing and slight rubati that create dramatic tension in the opening movement of the Bach Sonata in D minor. The turns and trills are lovely ornaments that simply roll off of his fingers, and throughout the sonata his sound is clean and bright. Lazic makes the melody flowing back and forth between hands in the final movement sound like a continuous stream of music. The first set of Britten works is so similar to C.P.E. Bach in character that one hardly notices the track has changed on the CD. The unique little pieces, 5 Waltzes, are an absolute delight, especially "II. Quick, with wit," which surprisingly sounds like Russian ballet music. "III. Dramatic" is completely different in character, revealing Lazic's ability to quickly change emotions. Its use of the pedal for a reverb effect creates a dreamy, floating mood that draws the listener in. Bach's La Böhmer is so rapid-fire and energetic that one cannot help but sit up and take note of Lazic's precision and rhythm. Only when one arrives at Britten's Holiday Diary does one hear the more expected 20th century tonality characteristic of the composer. This is especially evident in the tender, introspective "II. Sailing," with its interesting harmonies in which Lazic makes each note count. Thanks to a clear, balanced recording quality, Lazic always sounds warm and bright; there is never any unwanted or excess noise in his playing. He is an intelligent artist who has chosen repertoire that is well suited to him and that makes an interesting program. The album concludes with Night Piece by Britten, which is a delicate soufflé or heartbeat whisper of a piece. The fact that Lazic can evoke such a wide variety of emotions is a testament to his skills.
