Lebendige Vergangenheit's second release devoted to Marian Anderson includes German and Austrian music from the Romantic and post-Romantic periods. The recordings were made in 1947 and 1951 and are of varying sound quality, but none are scratchy or hissy enough to make them unlistenable, and a less than ideal recording is more than compensated for by Anderson's remarkable performances. Her huge range and the spectrum of colors with which she was able to inflect her voice are most prominent in the set of Schubert songs. In "Erlkönig" and "Der Tod und das Mädchen," the power and drama and beauty of her lower register are genuinely astonishing -- it's nearly impossible to believe that a woman could produce such low notes so convincingly. The latter song is followed on the CD by "Die Forelle," which Anderson sings with the lightness of a lyric soprano. Her reading of Schubert's "Ave Maria" is notable for the urgency and devotion she brings to a song whose overexposure can make it easy to dismiss; her shaping of the phrases is breathtaking. In Kindertotenlieder, accompanied by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra led by Pierre Monteux, her vibrato is a little broader than is currently fashionable, but she sings with great sensitivity and poignancy. The CD should be of strong interest to Anderson fans and to anyone who loves great singing in the service of a powerful interpretive personality.
