The world of Wardruna, populated by wolves and white crows (Kvitravn), has its seat in the vast mountainous and wooded expanses of the far North. This group is Norwegian, and draws on ancient traditions and beliefs, in which spirits and nature are intimately linked and respected. This fifth album by former black metal band Einar Selvik, Kvitravn reaffirms the power of his pagan neo-folk. The powerful voices of Selvik and singer Lindy Fay Hella, supported by ancient instruments (kravik lyre, tagelharpa harp and bukkehorn, carved from a goat's horn, and imposing percussion), sounds of nature and electronic textures, cry out for a reconciliation of man with his instincts and the Earth. On Lyfjaberg they evoke the healing power of the mountain, on the weavers' song Andvevarljod they invite the most respected traditional singers of Norway (Kirsten Bråten Berg, Sigrid Berg, Unni Løvlid, Ingebjørg Reinholdt) to back up their incantations. A record driving towards reconnection. © Benjamin MiNiMuM/Qobuz

The Dark Side of the Moon: An Astronomical Success

Pink Floyd's ground-breaking album The Dark Side of the Moon was the result of a long creative process that began around 1968. A Saucerful of Secrets (the main track from the eponymous album) was, for Nick Mason at least, where it all began. Their next album Ummagumma (1969) gave each band member the opportunity to create a solo piece, though they would have to combine their talents if they wanted to hit the jackpot. Pink Floyd continued to search for the perfect record with Meddle, an album which highlighted their skills in the studio, and Atom Heart Mother, before they reached nirvana with The Dark Side of the Moon. And the album’s perfection hasn’t faded one bit, even forty-five years after its release.

The Stylish Henry Mancini

Sophistication, humour, sensitivity… These are the words that often come to mind when describing Henry Mancini’s music. 23 years after his death, he is still seen as a major and influential pop composer. No doubt because, in addition to his glossy and light works for which he is renowned (notably Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Pink Panther), he also knew how to display the complexity of his musical language in more tormented compositions.

Let’s Head for Cape Verde

Ever since the Portuguese annexed this collection of desert islands in the 15th century to make it a slave trade hub, the Black and Portuguese populations have mixed over time to give birth to a brand new language and brand new music—each island more or less developing its own style—, transforming the Cape Verdean dry lands into a bottomless talent pool.
