Norway's Johan Kvandal is a good example of a composer who was well known at home but hardly at all abroad. He died in 1999, and late in life, he was quite venerated in Norway. This release by the Engegård Quartet offers a good overview of Kvandal's career as a whole for anyone who may be interested. Kvandal started out in a nationalist vein, pared down to attractively concise modal structures in the String Quartet No. 1, Op. 11, and there is a compelling economy of expression that marks all of these works. In the early '50s, Kvandal traveled to Paris, studied with Nadia Boulanger, and was exposed to Bartók, Stravinsky, and Messiaen. He never abandoned tonality entirely; the String Quartet No. 2, Op. 27, from the early '60s, marks Kvandal's deepest flirtation with high modernism, but it retains a characteristic lyrical quality. The String Quartet No. 3, Op. 60, represents the successful fusion of national and modern element that Kvandal developed in the later part of his life; it is not precisely like any music by any other composers, and it is well worth hearing for non-Norwegians. There is also a student fugue and a pair of Norwegian Dances. Ther performances by the Engegård Quartet are committed and accurate. This makes an excellent choice for anyone wanting to sample the works of this composer.
