The meeting between the Israeli rock star Dudu Tassa and Jonny Greenwood, former Radiohead guitarist, is nothing new. Himself married to an Israeli, Jonny Greenwood has immersed himself in the local culture and thus become familiar with Tassa’s poignant music. As early as 2009, Greenwood played guitar on one of Tassa’s albums, and in 2017, Tassa was the support act for Radiohead's American tour. The collaboration has now culminated in a full album. Jarak Qaribak is, first and foremost, an album by Dudu Tassa, conceived around a concept that is as surprising as it is complicated. Out of nine tracks, however, he only sings one of the songs.
The other tracks are offered to eight performers from the Arab world (Algeria, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Morocco, Dubai, etc.), who each sing a song from a country other than their own. All of them are love songs (“Jarak qaribak” means “your neighbour is your friend”). Dudu Tassa comes from a Jewish family in Iraq, and this project is obviously a symbol of reconciliation between Israel and the Arab world. But Jarak Qaribak is also, and above all, a bewitching record, a successful modernisation of vintage oriental music. We hear the strings, rhythms, and heart-breaking chants so typical of the genre. There is also plenty of electronic percussion, and, of course, Jonny Greenwood's guitar, tight and precise, weaving pop motifs into the traditional canvas. Produced by the two musicians, with the help of Nigel Godrich (Radiohead's official producer) on the mix, the album invents a perfectly fluid and harmonious fusion between two musical worlds which mostly pass each other by. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
