A big name in the Californian hip-hop scene (and also in the soul/R&B scene under the name Dudley Perkins), Declaime’s first two albums in the early 2000s (Andsoitsaid and Conversations with Dudley) propelled him into stardom. Featuring incredible tracks such as ‘Move It’ and ‘Song in D Minor’, these two records were produced by Oh No, DJ Romes and Madlib, the best beatmakers in Oxnard, California. This small town located an hour north of Los Angeles has also been home to the likes of Anderson Paak, DJ Babu from Dilated Peoples and Dave Grohl from Nirvana.
Madlib's family moved into the house across the street from Declaime's, sparking what would go on to become a thirty-year friendship and lengthy artistic collaboration, which is chronicled on In the Beginning. This third volume compiles tracks recorded between 1993 and 1996 (including ‘Ill Minded’, ‘Laff Now Cry’ and ‘Too Much Clout’), and it’s easy to hear the hip-hop/soul/funk/jazz/psychedelic sound that paved the way for Stones Throw (the label launched in 1996 by Peanut Butter Wolf), Beat scene and Brainfeeder. This is a little piece of history and a large chunk of nostalgia for fans of boom bap and the golden years of US hip-hop. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
