If, like Neeme Järvi, you’ve recorded the entire symphonic repertoire and a multitude of works by unknown composers, the only thing left to do is release concert recordings. Appointed Honorary Artistic Director for Life of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra in 2017, Neeme Järvi continues this long collaboration that began back in 1963. At over 85 years of age, he still hasn’t lost any of his vitality or musical inquisitiveness. This recording was made over the course of two concerts in Tallinn in 2019, and the programme kicks off with Polonia, a little-known overture written by a 20-year-old Wagner. Järvi has undoubtedly taken influence from Beethoven’s Leonore 3 overture, but the fearsomely energetic Estonian conductor also seems to infuse it with a relentless militaristic spirit. Next, his tireless curiosity leads him toward the Brahmsian Serenade, op. 95 by Max Reger. This is followed by a piece from Brahms himself: the stunning Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny), an orchestrally accompanied choral setting of the famous poem Hyperion, written by Friedrich Hölderlin. With its timpani ostinato, there are also strong undertones of A German Requiem. The State Choir Latvija from Riga once again demonstrates its incredible power, flexibility and intonation through a work enveloped in a gentle, reassuring hope. Mozart’s Ave Verum closes the programme—a beautiful way to avoid the well-worn path. ©François Hudry/Qobuz
