Horizonte is an hommage to Amílcar Cabral, architect of the independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cap Vert, who was assassinated before his dreams were fulfilled. During his lifetime, Cabral dreamed of reuniting these two close countries, similar to the intention of this record produced by Lisboeta Francisco “Fininho” Sousa and Parisian GUTS, who bring together historical and contemporary musical figures from the two nations. Bandé is a populous area in Bissau and Gamboa is a beach in Praia, capital of the Cap-Vert archipelago. Nephews of Amilcar, brothers Micas (vocals) and Juvenal Cabral (bass and musical directio) from band Tabanka Djaz and singer Iragrett Tavares from Bissau as well as Débora Paris, daughter of Cesara Evora’s bassist, and one of the most promising singers from the Cap-Vertean community in Lisbon.
In its first half, from Pé Di Bissilon to Tchon Di Guiledji, Horizonte revisits rare and unique tunes from the gambé repertoire, syncretic music from different ethnicities in Guinée-Bissau which emerged in the 50s. In the second half, from Mulato Ferrera to Nôs Tabanka, Bandé-Gamboa moves into a more intense funaná rhythm, music which emerged in the 70s in Salvador in Cap-Vert and accompanied the independence movement. Little known to Western audiences, the symbolic rhythms of the rich identities of these two closely-related countries demonstrate their contemporary reality with most sincere and irresistible realism. © Benjamin MiNiMum/Qobuz
