Joel Gilbert is a Bob Dylan aficionado, musician, and author who seems to have dedicated his life to uniting his three primary interests. As leader of the Dylan tribute band Highway 61 Revisited, Gilbert emulates Dylan from the voice on down through the music, the expressions, the fashion, and the gear. It's a little freaky, yet Gilbert has nevertheless garnered numerous accolades for his portrayal. This album captures Highway 61 Revisited versions of 13 memorable Dylan tracks. While Gilbert's vocal impersonation is spot-on throughout, especially on "I Want You" and "Tangled up in Blue," the instrumentation is at times a bit too slick to fully paint the picture desired. "Like a Rolling Stone"'s classic rock electric guitar is irritating, and "Highway 61 Revisited" itself is a little too busy with its noodling guitar licks and barroom piano. While these aren't necessarily bad versions of Dylan classics, they don't live up to the hype Gilbert has created around his act. That said, besides an occasional habit of sounding like a guy trying to sound like Mark Knopfler if he tried to sound like Bob Dylan ("Things Have Changed"), Gilbert and his band present an effective, mildly entertaining facsimile of their hero and his music.
