In alle commotie rond het High School Musical-fenomeen vergeet je al vlug dat deze tienersensatie eigenlijk een musical is met nummers die bijdragen aan het verhaal, die worden gezongen door de steeds wisselende cast. Dat helpt om de film te doen slagen, maar de soundtracks worden op die manier niet meer dan souvenirs van het gebeuren. Op HSM3 staan maar twee nummers die potentieel popsingles kunnen worden, beiden solo-showcases voor de twee grootste sterren van de productie, Vanessa Hudgens en Zac Efron. Hudgens heeft het beste nummer van het album, het gladde, gevoelige "Walk Away", terwijl Efron als NSYNC paradeert op "Scream". Beiden moeten onderdoen door Ashley Tisdale, die een kreng speelt, maar die meer charisma uitstraalt met het indrukwekkende nummer waarmee ze een beroemdheid wil worden, "I Want It All."
