Terwijl High School Musical een verrassend sterk karakter had, naast nummers die klonken alsof ze uit een musical van de middelbare school kwamen, doet het opzichtige vervolg eerder aan als High School Musical: The Ride. Het is geen echte verrassing dat dit album eerder naar conventionele pop neigt, als je bedenkt dat de meeste sterren van High School Musical solo-albums hebben uitgebracht, waaronder Ashley Tisdale, die met "Fabulous," een stukje diva-tastische pop heeft afgeleverd. "I Don't Dance" en "You Are the Music in Me" klinken funky en jong, met een knipoog naar de traditie van de show tune. Hoewel High School Musical 2 een beetje aan "vervolg-itis" lijdt, is het vrolijk en energiek, en misschien merken de kinderen niet dat het niet zo verfrissend is als het origineel.
