Jay Records' 1995 studio cast recording of Guys and Dolls was a significant contribution to theater music, presenting on two CDs the most complete presentation of the show ever committed to disc. Since then, however, the label has cheapened its work by licensing a "highlights" album drawn from the recording, and now it further muddies the waters with another shortened -- and this time revised -- version. This single-disc, hour-long album features half a dozen newly recorded tracks that serve to replace two of the 1995 cast's principals, Gregg Edelman, who played Sky Masterson, and Tim Flavin, who played Nathan Detroit. In their places are Ron Raines and Graham Bickley. No explanation is offered for the substitutions, though the CD booklet contains advertisements for solo albums on Jay by the two new cast members. Tim Flavin, who never managed a believable American accent, is not missed, especially since Bickley, in the limited amount of time he gets, proves a noticeable improvement. But Edelman's performance was one of the best things about the 1995 recording, and the deep-voiced, somewhat gruff Raines is much less impressive, especially because he inspires Emily Loesser, as Sarah Brown, to overact in their songs together, "I'll Know," "If I Were a Bell," "My Time of Day," and "I've Never Been in Love Before." Edelman and Loesser exhibited considerable chemistry; Raines and Loesser do not. (Thank God Kim Criswell's reading of Adelaide goes almost untouched.) Most of the new tracks are shorter than the ones they replace, as the disc itself is much shorter. The result is a disappointing botch of what had been one of the better recordings of Guys and Dolls. Stick with the two-disc version (CDJAY1294).
