Although Domenico Gabrielli performed as an accomplished and highly sought-after cellist throughout the majority of his short life, his limited compositions for the cello came only from his last two years. This Cello Classics album features Gabrielli's complete cello works as well several other short works from the High Baroque, yet this CD is much more than a mere collection of cello works. It is a concise history of the bass line itself, showing its progression from mere harmonic realization to its more melodic functions. This is accomplished in large part through a set of well-written, highly informative liner notes that give specific examples for listeners to follow along with while listening. The performances themselves are led by Richard Tunnicliffe performing on cello and bass violin (not to be confused with the double bass). His academic understanding of the music at hand translates clearly into highly demonstrative performances. Accompanied in various configurations by harpsichord, organ, theorbo, and a second cello, all of the musicians on the album have in common highly stylized Baroque-practice playing, impeccable intonation, sweeping lines, and an overall tone that is warm and rich without becoming heavy. Sure to satisfy cello fans and early music aficionados alike, this CD is recommended without reservation.
