Louisiana rapper JayDaYoungan was tragically murdered in 2022, leaving the world far too soon at the age of 24. The posthumous album Forever 23 2x showcases the range of styles and deliveries JayDaYoungan was capable of, and gives more examples of the talent that brought him platinum success so quickly. The 16 unreleased tracks that make up Forever 23 2x include the brutally raw toughness of "Fentanyl," followed shortly by the tropical instrumental and relaxed flows of "Dirty Soul" and the melodic R&B trap catchiness of "My Love." "Plays Callin" has a wiggly and hyperactive beat that recalls the radio hip-hop of the early 2000s, but Jay switches approaches quickly on the double-tracked vocal melodies and nonstop hooks of "Nobody Else." In the context of his death, album closer "Goodbye" is particularly heartbreaking, building on a gentle piano-led instrumental as JayDaYoungan expresses grief for a lost loved one while reflecting on regrets for his own fast-living ways. The sentimental song is a sorrowful if fitting closer for Forever 23 2x, ending with a grainy recording of Jay speaking on how short life is, and how everyone's gotta go someday.
