Baritone Benjamin Appl has a flair for unusual and engaging programs, but he may have outdone himself with Forbidden Fruit (Appl does not mean "apple" in German, for those wondering). The program has to do with temptation and desire, and the songs are even interspersed with biblical verses about the Fall and the Garden of Eden, but Appl is not after an album of semi-sacred songs. Instead, the concept offers a way to a strikingly flexible program with an exceptionally wide range of songs. Some of the pieces are at least somewhat adjacent to the biblical themes, but elsewhere Appl's approach seems to be a bit cheeky; most of the texts could be read two ways, and that is exactly what Appl is after; he is exploring the resonances of the biblical story. The idea ties together songs from folk music to Schoenberg (one of the Brettl-Lieder, as close as he ever came to writing popular-influenced music) to actual popular music in the form of Just a Gigolo, made famous by Louis Armstrong, among others. The temptation theme fits Schubert's Heidenröslein well, and that of desire is appropriate to one of the few male versions of Gretchen am Spinnrade. Appl is in his vocal prime, and the album has the delightful feel of bringing something new around every corner. It helps that he is one of the few truly trilingual singers out there; he has a feeling of familiarity in German, English, and French. The Auditorio Stelio Moro might seem a bit spacious for this intimate concept, but the wood damps the sound down, and Appl's words and ideas come through nicely. A thoroughly original and enjoyable song recital.
