The three works on this release by the Wigmore Soloists are not exactly unknown, but British audiences are more likely to have heard them than those elsewhere. This new recording on the BIS label, with excellent performances, may broaden their reach a bit, and that is all to the good. There is a lyrical, sometimes playful spirit in these works that exemplify the British resistance to High Modernism. Schubert is an influence in all three, inflected in different ways: sample the Allegro feroce finale of Howard Ferguson's Octet, Op. 4, of 1933. The Serenade in C for octet, Op. 41, of Robin Holloway, is written for the same combination as the Ferguson work (and both follow the Schubert Octet in F major, D. 803). It is a curious work that seems to turn sharp corners rather than going where one expects it to go, a bit reminiscent of Poulenc and Jean Françaix. The great British clarinetist Michael Collins is present throughout and comes to the fore in the Clarinet Quintet of Arthur Bliss, giving a bracing performance. The album was recorded at Menhuhin Hall on occasions more than a year apart, with different engineers, but the mastering is effective enough that this is very hard to hear. A chamber music release that will deliver hours of pleasant listening.
