E=MC2 is op bijna alle vlakken een kopie van het vorige album: alles draait om geluid, ritme en klankstructuur en niet zozeer om het liedgedeelte. Dat betekent dat pakkende melodietjes, en dus ook de zang, op de achtergrond verdwijnen. Omdat Carey meerdere octaven kan zingen, wat zo typisch is voor haar, is dat wel een beetje vreemd, maar het maakt Mariah niet alleen modern, het is ook een goede manier om haar ietwat kleiner wordende stembereik te camoufleren. Soms gaat deze productie gepaard met een rasechte meezinger, zoals op "I'm That Chick,", een mooi staaltje van Off the Wall-disco met een bijna frivole energie, en op "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time,", dat een lichtheid bevat dat het merendeel van E=MC2 mist.
