Dvořák's Slavonic Dances were created in response to a request from the publisher Simrock, who had had success with Brahms' Hungarian Dances, WoO 1, and was in search of continued profits from the same lode. His instincts were sound, for the first set of Slavonic Dances, Op. 46, was a worldwide success from the start. There are dozens of recordings of these, but the Prague Symphony Orchestra and conductor Tomás Brauner have the pieces in their bones and deliver a performance of rare infectiousness. From the attention-grabbing opening gesture through to the end of the first set of eight, this is brisk, toe-tapping, stylishly executed Dvořák that will convey to listeners something of how listeners heard these pieces in their own day. In the second set, Op. 72, Brauner holds to quick tempos; the result is that the program as a whole is a high-energy ride, but some of the detail in the more intricate second set is lost. Nevertheless, this is enormously enjoyable Dvořák, idiomatically recorded in Prague's Smetana Hall.
