Jason Amm (aka Solvent) creates the kind of electronic music that harks back to the pre-digital era of analog drum machines and modular synthesizers. Wielding a sizable arsenal of vintage keyboards and effects, Amm crafts pert, bouncy electro-pop anthems that reference early-‘80s acts such as Japan, Soft Cell, and Yaz, as well as the moody textures of post-rave IDM acts like Aphex Twin and Autechre. DEMONSTRATION TAPE (1997-2007) is a two-disc retrospective documenting a decade of Solvent’s buoyant melodicism and hands-on approach to synth-based songwriting. From the slow-boil romanticism of tracks like “Duckie” and “A Panel of Experts,” to the driving vocoder-fueled dance hit “My Radio,” the set is a welcome recap of highlights from one of electro’s most idiosyncratic voices.
