In 1954, at the age of 23, Michel Bernstein signed to his newly created label Vendôme (followed by the labels Valois, Astrée and Arcana), the world premiere recording of Debussy's Proses Lyriques by the Paris-based Swiss soprano Flore Wend, accompanied by the French pianist and composer Odette Gartenlaub. Completed by Chansons de Bilitis and Ballads by François Villon and recorded in 1954 at the Salle Adyar in Paris with the sound engineer André Charlin, this beautiful recording received critical acclaim when it was released in 1955 and launched the long series of many others, opening up new avenues, that were to be produced over the years by Michel Bernstein, the most important activ post-war French record producer.
