"Tonight is going to be a little different," says host Carolyn Thomas. That evening, Rory Gallagher was live on WCNR radio in Cleveland, Ohio, with only his acoustic guitar and harmonicas. The year was 1972. The Irishman had exploded the previous year with his first album under his own name, the pinnacle of electric blues-rock at the time. Gallagher's solo acoustic work was obviously a bit different. Though he didn’t necessarily see it that way, after all, his music was inspired by blues and folk, genres which fare well without the addition of electricity and rock. Cleveland Calling Pt. 1 features eight flawless tracks (two Muddy Waters covers, as well as covers of Blind Boy Fuller and Big Bill Broonzy and his own songs) and an interview. It feels as if you’re listening to him round a campfire. The songs are as mesmerising as a dancing flame and his voice is like caramel as he responds to the questions asked by Carolyn Thomas, who’s given a harmonica lesson by Rory. Much better than an unreleased album from the back drawer (the tapes were found in the radio station's premises), Cleveland Calling Pt. 1 is an intimate document that sheds light on Rory Gallagher's roots and spirit. When he tells his interviewer, "I love people who were musicians before they became stars," it's as if he were talking about himself. That’s why everyone loves him. Why is it called "Part 1" you ask? Because there’s also a "Part 2", only this time it’s electronic and with a band. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
