Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) Heitor Villa-Lobos is one of the most important composers from the American continent. In addition to 17 string quartets, written between 1915 and 1917, his impressive oeuvre includes operas, cantatas, 12 symphonies, 14 choros, piano works, and pieces for various chamber music combinations. As an admirer of J.S. Bach, he endeavored to combine the architectural genius of the Leipzig cantor with exotic elements drawn from Brazilian folk music. Because of his concern over the lack of an infrastructure for classical music in his native land, he was also for many years a tireless founder of choirs and music schools.
