The program of this release by clarinetist Paul Meyer and pianist Éric Le Sage is a splendid one, and this seems to have been almost a matter of chance; the two Brahms clarinet-and-piano sonatas of Op. 120 were recorded as long ago as 2001, while Carl Reinecke's Undine Sonata, Op. 167, was added on in 2022. The Brahms performances are smoothly executed in the best French conservatory tradition, and there is no word in Sony's packaging as to why they took so long to surface. There is a shift in the sound environment when the Brahms starts, but it doesn't matter much, for the real draw here, for wind players and for general listeners alike, is the Undine Sonata. This work was originally for flute and piano, and it shows up from time to time on university flute recitals and the like. However, the clarinet version, by Reinecke himself, is apparently receiving its world-recorded premiere here, and it hasn't been heard anywhere for many years. The clarinet seems somehow more suited to the work's programmatic aspect, which is quite artfully woven into a true four-movement sonata form; Undine (or Ondine) was a sort of Renaissance myth that gave birth to a line of characters running down to the Little Mermaid in the present day. Reinecke's work is based on an 1811 novel that is now forgotten, but it feels as though a listener's guess as to the events depicted might be close. Meyer's playing is especially expressive in this work, which may well expand the clarinet repertory and is a real find, worth any listener's time.
