In 1993, one of the rap releases that fell through the cracks was New Version of Soul's Birth of the Souladelic. The CD's lack of commercial success can be attributed to a number of things. A big part of the problem was a lack of promotion on Capitol's part, and the group's unusual image (by hip-hop standards) may have also had something to do with it -- at a time when other hip-hoppers were parading around in baggy clothes, New Version of Soul's members favored colorful, over-the-top costumes that recalled Parliament/Funkadelic in the 1970s. Also, the fact that the obscure Atlanta quintet consisted of three males and two females was usual for rap -- in 1993, most rap groups were either all male or all female. New Version of Soul looked like an R&B group, not a rap group. At any rate, this is a generally decent and promising, if uneven, debut that should have done better. Some of the material is hardcore rap and some of it is alternative rap along the lines of Digital Underground or De La Soul. Parliament/Funkadelic is a major influence on many of the tunes, but while the hip-hop meets p-funk approach brought Digital Underground commercial success, Birth of the Souladelic received very little attention. And that's regrettable because even though the CD isn't perfect, one hears a lot of undeveloped potential.
