If it weren't for the sound and the playing, this would be a terrific disc. Granted, mediocre sound makes it very difficult to hear and mediocre playing makes it nearly impossible to achieve -- and yet Finnish conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste does the very difficult and the nearly impossible and just about but not quite attains terrific. His driving account of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 has as much urgency, as much cogency, and as much sheer will power as conductors like Arturo Toscanini and Erich Kleiber, while his sprightly account of Mozart's Symphony No. 39 has as much light, as much lyricism, and as much effortless grace as conductors like Bruno Walter or Josef Krips. Of course, aside from some piquant woodwind playing, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra's playing is so scrappy and small scale that the power and beauty of Saraste's conception of the music is only weakly apprehensible, while Virgin's early digital sound is so distant and gray that the color and warmth of Saraste's conception is likewise only faintly audible. Still, what one can make out of what he has in mind for the music is so powerful and persuasive that one cannot but admire his strength and determination. Listeners unfamiliar with these works are advised to seek out recordings by the above-mentioned conductors among many, many others. Listeners unfamiliar with Saraste are advised to seek out either of his cycles of Sibelius' symphonies with the Finnish Radio Symphony. This disc is only for fans of the conductor who have to hear everything he's ever done.
