For sixty years, Fairuz’s voice has symbolised the soul of Lebanon. An undeniable reach that has warmed the hearts of countless inhabitants in the Arab world and beyond. After rising to fame at the end of the 50s thanks to the compositions and arrangements of her husband Mansour and her brother Assi Rahbany, she continued on her musical path with her son Zyad. And now, she turns to her daughter Reema, who produced Bebalee (The Way We Were). At 83 years of age, Fairuz has decided to give the world her interpretation, in Arabic, of the classics of international music born in Europe and America. She starts with a capella for Rah Nerjaa netla’a, an adaptation of the Scottish chant Auld Lang Syne, known in English as Old Long Since: a beautiful farewell at the twilight of a sumptuous career and the indisputable proof of the depth of her singing. Next are often surprising and always dignified versions of Don’t Cry For Me Argentina (Ma Tezaal Mennee), Imagine (Yemken) and Besame Mucho (Ana Weyyak)… She also pays tribute to French heritage, covering Gilbert Bécaud’s greatest successes, appropriating Comme d’habitude (Hkayat Kteer), and concluding her selection with Ma Cabane au Canada (Baytee Zgheer), originally popularised by Line Renaud. The orchestrations are charming and nostalgic, and bring back to life the golden era of the 1950s-70s, when Lebanon was a place of harmonious exchanges between European chic and Arabic elegance… The piano is soft, the guitars are warm, the violins languid, and the Arabic percussions provide a rather sensual vigour. The language and moving voice of the diva from Beirut give a new glow to these melodies we thought worn out, and allow Fairuz to make her goodbyes to the entire world. © BM/Qobuz
