An Awesome Wave is het debuutalbum van de heet getipte Engelse act Alt-J. De bandleden ontmoetten elkaar terwijl ze studeerden aan Leeds University. Ze brachten twee jaar door met repeteren in de kelder van hun studentenhuis, terwijl ze hun minimale art-rockstijl verfijnden. Zonder enige versterkers of eigen drums improviseerde het trio, met het gebruik van bongo’s in plaats van toms waarmee ze de rommelende R&B-klank van de drums op nummers als “Tessellate” en “Fitzpleasure” creëerden. De folkgitaren- en melodieën zorgen voor een unieke combinatie van genres.
