Right from the beginning, with Dave Alvin's title song, the Blasters made their statement, that basic rock & roll was as contemporary in 1980 as it had been in the mid-'50s. The other 12 tracks, which mixed Dave and Phil Alvin originals with covers like "I Wish You Would" and "Never No More Blues," reiterated the opening remark, re-creating the feel of a biker bar after a couple of tall ones. Actually, the Blasters didn't have much to say beyond this record, of which only a couple of thousand copies were pressed, but they went on to a few years with Warner Bros. [In the late '90s, the debut was released on CD with six bonus tracks, all covers, and that statement seemed just as valid as it had at first.]

In your panoramas...
Americana, America Through its Roots

The title may sound like a nebulous marketing ploy, and yet for about twenty years, Americana had been summarizing this blend of rock, country, blues and rhythm ‘n’ blues. And like in every big family, you’ll find almost every type of person: the rebellious daughter, the cultivated uncle, the agitated father, the driven cousin, etc.

Curtis Mayfield, in a League of his Own

Aesthete guitar player worshiped by Jimi Hendrix, extraordinary falsetto singer revered by Prince, and a brilliant songwriter, Curtis Mayfield treated melodies as a master sculptor. His songs melded funk, gospel and soul together. Twenty years after his death, his politically charged music is still relevant and well-suited to describe America under Donald Trump.

Moby, 30 Years in Search of the Light

Moby is that rarest of artists, a songwriter who has evolved from punk to techno/house to pop, all while continuing to compose ambient music. To mark the release of Reprise, a collection of covers celebrating 30 years of songwriting, Qobuz revisits the career of an artist who has constantly kept the music world off-balance – sometimes even wrong-footing himself – before finally finding his artistic sweet-spot.
