This album, recorded in early 2021, became a best-seller over the 2021 Christmas season and is claimed to be the first full-choir recording made in Britain since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Its relevance, however, should outlast its immediate circumstances. The annual Festival of Lessons & Carols is generally associated with King's College, Cambridge, but it began at Truro Cathedral, which has some of the loveliest acoustics of the whole collection of English church recording venues. Truro has continued the tradition of commissioning a new carol for each year's performance, and many of those are represented here, along with one piece from Cambridge, Judith Weir's Illuminare, Jerusalem. There are eight world premieres here, several of them by Cornish composers, and most of the music will be new even to English choral music enthusiasts. Much of the music is a cappella; the rest is accompanied by piano or organ (the program concludes with a dense set of Variations on Greensleeves for organ solo by David Briggs). There are settings of traditional carols, and many could serve as fresh variations on the versions usually heard; sample Becky McGlade's take on In the bleak midwinter. There are also fine original works, such as the one that gives the album its title, with text by two of the members of the choir. In all, despite the uncertain circumstances under which it was recorded, this is a superb holiday album, both personal and of larger significance.
