Bloc Party is verdrietiger, wijzer en heeft meer dan ooit het hart op de tong op dit onbeschaamde, ambitieuze, emotionele album. Kele Okereke zingt nog steeds alsof er geen tijd is om te verdoen, maar zijn songwriting wordt getemperd door ervaring. Op “Waiting for the 7:18”, zing hij: ”If I could do it again, I’d climb more trees/I’d pick and I’d eat more wild blackberries.” De tracks die nieuw sonisch terrein ontginnen brengen een drugsachtig escapisme over. Op “On” vervaagt de grens tussen het high zijn van drugs en het zijn van een persoon, terwijl op “The Prayer” het ritualistische gevoel van het dansen in een volle club uitgedistilleerd wordt. Fans die positief reageerden op de donkere, hoekige art-pop van Bloc Party zullen wellicht in eerste instantie teleurgesteld zijn, maar de stap van vervreemding naar hoop op dit album is net zo dapper als Silent Alarm.
