Fabric, the central hub of London’s electronic music scene, has seen all the key artists from the past twenty years pass through its doors, hosting over 1000 weekends stretching long into the small hours. The club has transformed their community of partygoers into music fanatics via two compilation series: Fabric and FabricLive. However, in 2018 the institution announced that it would be bringing the two series to a close. They ended with a great deal of fanfare, as the hundredth volume of Fabric was entrusted to the club’s legendary residents Craig Richards and Terry Francis, while the hundredth FabricLive, a series dedicated to “broken” music (dubstep, drum’n’bass etc), was handed to Burial and Kode9.
The Fabric Presents series then took over, featuring Bonobo, Kölsch, Martinez Brothers and Amélie Lens in 2019. For its twentieth birthday party, however, Fabric has gone back to its roots with a double compilation album featuring exclusive tracks by artists who have been tightly involved with the label, and who also happen to be among the most interesting on the scene. On the “breaks” album we find Shackleton, who made his mark with Fabric 55, J. Majik, James Lavelle and even the dubstep-master Pinch. On the “techno” side we find the English producer Maya Jane Coles, Berghain’s resident Marcel Dettmann on a big peak time track, and Nina Kraviz, who delivers one of her best tracks (Da, with its hypnotic raw techno beat), not forgetting Margaret Dygas, who unveils Zeitgeist, ten iconoclastic minutes of minimalism that prove she is worthy of being signed with Perlon, and perhaps the most jazzy techno track of the year. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
