Bijna drie jaar na haar tweede album, waarop de Amerikaanse top vijf hit “Paper Planes” stond, keert M.I.A. terug met MAYA, een set uitgebracht op haar N.E.E.T. label via XL en Astralwerks. De twee songs die als teasers werden uitgebracht – het hardvochtige en repetitieve “Born Free,” gepaard met een de aandacht grijpende video, en het slinkse, versassend poppy nummer “XXXO” – gaven het brede spectrum dat het album bestrijkt al goed weer. Diplo, Blaqstarr, Switch en Rusko hebben allen bij gedragen aan het album.
