About Playlist
The story of Nina Simone, née Eunice Kathleen Waymon, is one of an artist emblematic of the struggles of being born in a country under the yoke of racial segregation. She was an American pianist, singer, songwriter, and civiil rights activist, renaming herself (Nina from the Spanish word for "little girl"—a nickname bestowed by a boyfriend—and Simone, borrowed from actress Simone Signoret, whom she saw in Jacques Becker's Casque d'Or) to disguise her identity from her religious family while playing piano in Atlantic City cocktail bars at the beginning of her career. Originally wanting to become a classical pianist (Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music infamously rejected her application in 1950), she eventually played and performed in a variety of musical styles including jazz, blues, classical, soul, folk, R&B, gospel and pop.
Over the course of her career, Nina Simone recorded more than 40 albums, from her debut, 1958's Little Girl Blue to her final studio recording, 1993's A Single Woman. Her original style fused gospel and pop songs with classical music and served as an influential and powerful source of inspiration in the fight for equal rights.
