Charles Rumback
Chicago's Charles Rumback is a forward-thinking drummer with a bent toward avant-garde jazz and experimental music. In addition to playing in various jazz configurations, he collaborated with virtuosic folk guitarist Ryley Walker on a series of albums that began with 2016's Cannots.
A native of Kansas, in 2001 Rumback relocated to Chicago, where he found work backing such acts as Via Tania, L'Altra, Ron Miles, Jeff Parker, Charles Gorczynski, Nina Nastasia, Bill MacKay, and others. He is also a member of the genre-bending outfits Colorlist, Leaf Bird, and Stirrup. Rumback has released several albums as a leader, including 2009's Two Kinds of Art Thieves and 2015's In the New Year. In 2016 he collaborated with singer/guitarist Ryley Walker on Cannots. After several other lesser releases and plentiful live performances drumming in various groups, Rumback and Walker reunited for another album, releasing the folksy Little Common Twist on Thrill Jockey in 2019.
