Forging ahead without Patrick Carney, his long-time drummer and bandmate in The Black Keys, Dan Auerbach appears incapable of taking a break. His restless creative energy has resulted in the birth of a new project, entitled The Arcs. The band, however, is in no sense entirely new, as it brings together a group of friends that Auerbach regularly jams with, namely Leon Michels, Richard Swift, drummer Homer Steinweiss and bassist Nick Moyshon. These are all musicians that Auerbach worked with on the albums he produced for Ray LaMontagne, Lana Del Rey, Dr. John, and others. Over a period of a few months, the company accumulated more than 70 songs to draw on for the construction of their new record, Yours, Dreamily. Guitarist Kenny Vaughan, from the New York mariachi group Flor de Toloache, is also on the album. Recording sessions took place ad-hoc in studios located in virtually every corner of the United States, including the Sound Factory in Los Angeles, the Diamond Mine in Encino, Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan, and in Auerbach’s own Easy Eye Sound in Nashville… Unlike The Black Keys, in which Auerbach writes all of the lyrics and most of the music, here the guitar-wizard collaborates with all members of The Arcs. The result is an eclectic offering of classic rock; inflected by the sounds of soul and the blues. ‘We listen to all kinds of things, like old soul records, Captain Beefheart, and recent hip-hop albums’, asserted Auerbach, in an attempt to locate the record’s stylistic richness. Obviously, with his voice layered on top of it all, we sometimes think of The Black Keys, but it is the sound of a much less percussive band, one that is less musically obsessed with the blues and vintage rock’n’roll. The Arcs’s first album is a record designed with serious intent, and we hope that there will be much more to come! © MD / Qobuz
