By the late '90s, Teddy Pendergrass was no longer the superstar he once was, due not only to changing fashions but also to the lackluster quality of his music. With 1997's You and I, he made an attempt to revive his career, and even though the album is not perfect, he largely succeeds. The material on You and I is fairly uneven, but the best moments on the album, including "Let's Talk About It" and the title track, demonstrate that Pendergrass still has the ability to create richly seductive urban soul. It's his best album in years.
