Willow: The Joan Armatrading Collection, simply put, isn't what it could be. There is no reason a double-disc collection of Joan Armatrading's work should not contain studio versions of "Love and Affection" and "Show Some Emotion." This one has a live take of the former and doesn't even contain the latter! Most of the rest is included, most of it recorded between 1975 and 1983, with some tracks coming from later years. No prejudice there; Armatrading may have shocked people when she went for a more keyboard-driven sound in the 1980s, but the songs and performances were still there, as is evidenced by "Drop the Pilot." But that said, where is "I Love It (When You Call Me Names)," one of her last big global hits? It is omissions like this one that make this all but worthless as a representative compilation of an eclectic yet highly original artist. Look for 2003's Love and Affection: Classics 1975-1983 instead.
