The philosopher Heraclitus famously said, some years ago now, that “No man ever steps in the same river twice”; a poetic illustration of the world's existence in a constant state of flux. However, music lovers would tell you that some rivers stay the same. For example, the Mississippi and the Niger. One is rich with the silt of American blues, and the other, near Niafunké in Mali, is the spring of Ali Farka Touré’s music. In these two great rivers, that hum and roar with music, one can always return to bathe, and cleanse the ears and mind in their purity.
Voyageur, a posthumous release from Ali Farka Touré (who died in 2006), provokes this, standing out as one of his best from the very first tracks. Among these nine unreleased tracks, gathered by Ali Farka Touré (then his producer Nick Gold) over a period of fifteen years, we find the hypnotic and rhythmic pulse of the calabash, percussion that clatters and jingles, guitars and flutes that weave, a rocky voice answered by ample choirs, and songs shrouded in an ancestral yet accessible mystery. In terms of novelty, there are three tracks sung with Oumou Sangaré, and a saxophone features on a couple others. Ali Farka Touré's music, and this album in particular, is a veritable transcendent experience. These nine traveller's songs are raw, never over-produced, simple and full of nuance; they will take the Ali Farka Touré across a great blue river, and into paradise. @ Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
