Asgeir's work is perhaps the quintessence of what you might describe as ‘island pop music’ (in the literal sense too, since the young singer-songwriter mostly conceived this fourth album from his home studio in Iceland). The lyrics illustrate poetic tales that make powerful references to some of Iceland's dark and sparse landscapes. Asgeir's father, Einar Georg Einarsson, is one of the country's most famous poets (and the author of four tracks on the album). ‘Golden Hour’ and the ballad ‘Waiting Room’ both definitely deserve a special mention, conjuring up images of still lakes and long forest walks.
Asgeir considers music an island in its own right—an autocratic utopia where the thirst for freedom is immeasurable. This desire for freedom is palpable in the musician’s daring assembly of both electronic and acoustic sounds (with prominent brass instruments). His style is characterised by energetic and melodious pop that he elegantly combines with more introspective, intimate and melancholic colours: this energy manifests itself through particularly sophisticated percussion, whilst introspection ripples through the music thanks to the beautiful electronic textures created with vintage synths (Korg Delta, Memorymoog...). © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
