There are several draws to this solo guitar recital, self-issued by guitarist Mattias Schulstad. One is the sound, which helped earn producer David Frost a Grammy nomination for Classical Producer of the Year. It is ideal, drawing the listener into the physicality of guitar music without leaving one awash in string noise and other nonmusical sounds. Even better, though, are Schulstad's performances, which are elegant in the extreme, and the repertory he has picked and woven into a beautifully coherent whole. The pieces are not outwardly fiery, although there is a confident, well-hidden virtuosity in some of them. Instead, the guitarist mixes music from a variety of sources, creating quite a hypnotic journey. Some of the pieces, serving as quiet interludes, are limpid folk songs and other simple pieces (sample Waldemar Åhlén's lovely Sommarpsalm) from Schulstad's native Sweden, beautifully set off against Carlo Domeniconi's Koyunbaba, based on Turkish music. This piece is becoming better known among guitarists, but it is not yet really a common item in concerts, and listeners will be delighted to discover its Turkish shadings in Schulstad's hands. There are also some of the usual pieces from the Hispanic world, taking on new flavors in these surroundings. Schulstad's playing has a quiet refinement throughout, and the listener willing to enter into a contemplative frame of mind will reap big rewards here.
