The pairing of Josef Suk's Symphony in C minor, "Asrael," and Benjamin Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem is an inspired programming choice, though listening to these two somber memorials in quick succession will be an overwhelming experience. Suk composed his symphony following the deaths of his father-in-law, Antonin Dvorák, and of his young wife, Otilie; the association with Asrael, the Angel of Death in Jewish, Islamic, and Sikh lore, evokes the themes of grief, pain, and consolation. Britten composed his three-movement work with the Roman Catholic mass for the dead as his inspiration, and upon completion gave it a dedication to the memory of his parents. Jirí Belohlávek and the BBC Symphony Orchestra deliver powerful live performances of both works, and Supraphon's excellent recording presents the music with great clarity and presence. The pieces contain many quiet passages that are captured with fine, clearly audible details, so the volume settings won't need constant adjustment. Even so, listeners should be prepared for the shattering climax in the first movement of "Asrael" and several explosive sections in the Sinfonia da Requiem.
