The great early-DJ era in Jamaican music is spotlighted on this fine Trojan release. Spread out over 20 cuts, Dennis Alcapone's work is given the majority of the focus here, with over ten of his early-'70s songs included in the set; of particular interest are his excellent versions of classic cuts from the Ethiopians ("Engine Engine Number 9") and the Techniques ("Love Is Not a Gamble"). Joining the Alcapone party, DJ originator U-Roy delivers a few classics, while relative underlings Lizzy and Natural Youth both score with crucial sides of their own. A tasty way to find out more about reggae's microphone masters.
